Whole Home Remodeling
This modest lake home had grown outdated, and it was time to make it comfortable for family of all ages. With the help of an asbestos abatement crew, we gutted the main floor and all of the insulation. After some rethinking of the layout in the kitchen, and bedrooms, we carried the project through all of the stages: framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, insulating, drywall, painting, flooring, trimming and doors, and some various exterior work, including new doors and windows, and a deck with an ADA compliant ramp and handrail. This large project was kept low-cost by using mid-range materials, fixtures, and mouldings, including a tasteful use of luxury vinyl plank flooring.

Luxury Bathroom Remodel
After buying a new home, something didn’t feel right int the primary bathroom. It was always cold, to the point of requiring a space heater to be made comfortable in winter. With the help of an interior designer, we carefully deconstructed the bathroom, using careful dust management techniques, including dust extraction ventilation, plastic barrier walls, and continuous floor protection. The new bathroom includes electric in-floor heat with an app-controlled thermostat, a freestanding soaking tub, hardwood vanity, fresh tile and custom shower glass. The shower area was also redesigned for easy access of the shower valve for pre-heating the shower space, to make it steamy.

Classic Bathroom Remodel
This older home needed a bathroom facelift without breaking the bank. We turned an awkward tub into a comfortable shower/tub combo. To emphasize a classic style, we used tile trim pieces that resembled mouldings found elsewhere in the house. Similar trim elements were used around the room with fresh wainscoting. We capped off the project with a beautiful custom threshold into the adjoining bedroom using locally grown black ash wood.

This home had a 2nd floor bathroom, but nothing on the main floor. That was a growing problem for the new owners and their guests, and they also wanted to be able to rinse off after using their outdoor sauna. We drafted a winning floorplan for an addition off the main floor that would integrate with an existing “bump out” entryway, itself an addition from a previous era. We lead the project through demolition, excavation, foundation, framing, roofing, siding, and rough plumbing and rough electrical. The homeowner saved costs by doing a concrete slab floor, and saved space with in-floor radiant heat. They also sought to save costs by doing the drywall and trim themselves, and we obliged.

Screen Porch Addition
The cabin had a good deck, but there was one corner the homeowners used the most. This space would also get too sunny in the summer, so they set up a shade tent. This gave inspiration for a 12’ x 10’ screen porch to be built, integrating with their existing deck. We designed and poured frost-proof footings (60’ deep for northern Minnesota!), and worked with a local timber framer for a spectacular added touch. Suitable for a porch, much of the framing remained exposed, including traditional joinery and pegs. The structure was completed with red cedar lap siding, red cedar sills, custom built-in screens, and removable acrylic plexiglass windows to extend the use of the porch into the shoulder seasons, and even winter.

Turn Your Attic into a Bonus Room or Bedroom
To grow the value of a home, some look to unfinished spaces, like attics, to find possibilities for storage and habitable space. Whether it’s an office, bonus room, or a bedroom, the walls and ceiling often need modification to meet the safety and code requirements for a habitable residential space. There is the matter of ensuring egress and fire code - both hugely important for attic spaces - in addition to ensuring the layers of the walls and ceiling allow for drying and controlling moisture and air flow, while also providing heating and cooling systems for year-round comfort.

Powder Room Rehab
This small main floor full bath had fallen into neglect. We were hired to turn it around and make it comfortable for guests. We gutted the space and updated all of the features, swapping a cast iron tub for a shower system, swapping the ceiling lamp for a quiet vent fan and integrated light, patching the hole in the wall left by the medicine cabinet and hanging a simple mirror in its place. The space works better for them now and they aren’t embarrassed to have their guests use the main floor bathroom.
